Candace Nykiforuk

Dr. Nykiforuk is a health geographer and population health researcher with expertise in program and policy research at community and provincial levels. Her primary interest is in investigating "context" in chronic disease prevention. She is particularly interested in examining the role of place (i.e., setting or environment) on the development and success of community interventions and policy changes to support health. Her work employs social-ecological and community-based participatory research perspectives through the lenses of population health, health promotion, and knowledge exchange. Dr. Nykiforuk is one of the few researchers in Canada using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support chronic disease prevention research and evaluation.

In addition to being an assistant professor with the Centre, Dr. Nykiforuk is an an affiliate scientist with the Centre for Behavioural Research and Program Evaluation (University of Waterloo) and mentor with the Pan Canadian Strategic Training Program in Population Intervention Research for Chronic Disease Prevention. She is also an investigator with Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (OTRU) and the Population Health Research Group (University of Waterloo).

Dr. Nykiforuk is the principal investigator of the Policy, Location, and Access in Community Environments (PLACE) Laboratory.
